At Earnshaw State College, we believe that there is a link between student engagement at school and every student achieving success.

The attendance of all students in the college in monitored at several levels, so staff are able to identify students who are at risk of disengaging. Identified students with regular absences are referred to the Student Support Team, where stakeholder' meetings are scheduled to determine actions to support re-engagement.

Secondary students may be referred to the FlexiSpace to develop a Part-Time Educational Plan or Flexible Arrangement Plan, in collaboration with parents, identifying:

  • Challenges to full-time attendance
  • Subjects requiring intensive support
  • Graduate return schedules
  • Subjects to be removed from learning plan
  • Flexible learning arrangements
  • Vocational education opportunities
  • Work experience opportunities

These plans are communicated to all teachers to ensure that clear expectations for engagement are reinforced across all subject areas. A referral to the Vocational Education Coordinator will also be made if applicable.

A small percentage of students may need an intensive support model to develop a plan for maintaining engagement in education either at school or in an alternative setting. This may include a referral to personnel outside agencies who are able to connect students to a pathway that will result in further education or employment, such as the Regional Transition Pathways Officer and Get Set for Work programs. Alternative or flexible learning organisations that provide opportunities for students to maintain engagement in education with a flexible approach, include Queensland Pathways State College, Arethusa College, Jabiru Community College, and Brisbane School of Distance Education.

Please contact the Senior Office with any concerns regarding student disengagement, and the referred staff member with make contact.
